An Interesting Book?

The book is: Concealed, She's Got a Gun by Shelley Calton. It is apparently a photo essay of armed women in Texas and should be available this September (it is available for pre-order now).

I may have to go to my local Barnes & Noble to check this one out. Here is a sample of one of the photographs it will contain when on the shelves.

Man Oh Man Is Clint Eastwood Really 85 Today?

It seems to me like only it was only yesterday when he looked like this.

Born on May 31, 1930, Clint Eastwood turned 85 years old today. It is almost hard for me to believe that the star of Rawhide, Coogan's Bluff, Paint Your Wagon, Beguiled, Dirty Harry, High Plains Drifter, Absolute Power, Gran Torino, and many others, is that old. I usually think of him looking much like he is pictured above. Of course, when I see a recent photo, it is easy to believe he is in his eighties because he does look his age but I have to admit he still looks tough.



In his eighties, he still looks chiseled and tough.

Felonious Bumper Sticker

The psycho-Freudian-fanatics are at it again, this time claiming that the application of bumper stickers, window decals, or other symbols to your motor vehicle are an indicator that you are more apt to commit road rage than someone with no such crap applied to their cars. More here.

 

I've witnessed road rage more than enough, here in NY especially in the Rotten Apple, to know that is a lot of balderdash.

 

Hand slamming down on center of steering wheel, pressing on horn, horn blaring BEEEEEEP, BEEP BEEP, BEEEEEEEEEEP, window rolling down, driver's head sticking out, spittle flying, yelling "F-you you moron" as  the driver's middle finger flips into the general direction of the jerk driving the Prius and not a single bumpersticker on the car of the guy doing all that.

 

It's just more psycho-babble as far as I can see but you can bet that the police will use it in court, to convict some nut job of road rage related crimes, sooner or later. That is if the psycho-Freudian-fanatics buy into it to any great extent. Then again, maybe they have a point, don't the police have all those decals all over their cars and wear uniforms and badges and... That could explain a lot of things about all of these questionable  beatings and shootings by police lately.

Dickhead...

...usually is a word used to describe an idiot, moron, stupid dunce, ridiculous person who can be rather annoying in his stupidity (and I said "his" because it usually refers to a male). In other words, the guy being called a dickhead is usually a brainless wonder much akin to the head of a real dick that also has no brain.

However, sometimes, there is another definition for that word that is so right you cannot help but wonder if the meaning of the word has to do not with intelligence but appearances and it would not surprise me if this image shows up in the dictionary with that word:

but you can bet that the term will stick with him for his lifetime or longer.

Just Got Home From Work...

...maybe 45 minutes ago or so. That was after an hour long drive, all ten miles of it (almost exactly 10 miles). Add another 10 minutes I spent at a quick stop in my local liquor store and while the drive was as annoying as it is regular (when I work a that location) the result of my pit stop will soothe everything. I picked up a jar of Old Smokey Moonshine for me and the boy (now a young man) and a bottle of Riesling for the wife. Can you imagine though, driving a mere ten fucking miles and it taking you an hour to accomplish it - especially a day at work that sucked like did today for me (just had to deal with too many arsehats today). That's everyday traffic too, during the return rush hour! When I lived in southern CA, I used to drive the 12 miles to work in about 12 - 14 minutes at an easy going pace but that was in the middle of butt fuck nowhere in the Imperial Valley. I would love traffic to be like that for me now but not at the cost of moving to CA, it's worse than NY as far as I am concerned although not by much. Oh to live in a free state.

Anyway, once I got done feeding the critters that needed to be fed (tortoises, turtles, fish, lizards and newts) I grabbed an ale and logged online. One of the first stops was Wirecutter's blog Knuckledraggin My Life Away. Once I got there, I scrolled through his posts, read this one and that, kept scrolling and arrived at one that immediately put me at ease as it washed away even the faintest thought of work and of my commute as I viewed what was there to behold. What can In say, I may be an old married man but I'm not dead and I can still appreciate what was forever lost to me once I got married. Thanks Kenny!

China Has Been Preparing For War...

...in a buildup of its military for years now (at least during the current and previous presidential administrations in the US). All the while, we here in the USA twiddle our thumbs as if nothing is happening and even go so far as to continuously reduce our military preparedness to face such a looming threat. China has not only increased its military forces but has actually gone as far as increasing its territory by building at least one artificial island in a disputed territory and has now placed artillery on that island according to this article. If all this is not reminiscent of Japan and Germany before WWII then nothing is like it. ISIS may be the major threat we face if they acquire nukes but the China is actually the major threat we face in the world today, followed by Russia with ISIS possibly a distant third for the immediate damage they could do to us.

The Border Patrol Of Yesteryear Was Different And I Remember When...

...border patrol agents were highly respected and pretty much only feared by illegal aliens and alien smugglers as well as maybe some drug smugglers. For the most part we were only hated by racists and criminals back then.We proudly did our jobs protecting the United States of America even though by the time I was on the job things were making a sharp left turn toward welcoming illegals into our country instead of preventing them from entering and or deporting them once they had done so. It was a different time and a different world then. It truly saddens me to see that the sentiment the border patrol has been getting in recent years runs more along these lines.

There Is Another NE Bloggershoot Being Planned...

...and I can't wait to be there. This one is set for August and I am ready to go and get there to start shooting and to meet with one heck of a good crowd of fine folks.

This year, I may save up to buy a new shooter to bring with me and Brendan. Yes, he is planning on coming too, so if I get a new gun we can have fun with something new for both of us. I don't think it will be in a new gun in a caliber in which I don't already own guns. Buying a new caliber of ammo could be cost prohibitive nowadays and anyway, I have a good stock of most calibers we already shoot, so it will probably be something in one of those calibers. Those include 22LR, 22WMR, 32ACP, 9mm, 45ACP, 308WIN, 5.56x45mm, 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R and 12 gauge. I am pretty sure it will not be a shotgun but if it is, it will be a 12 gauge.

Along the lines of getting a new gun, there is a Hesnney Auction scheduled for June 20th in Geneva, NY. If I can get to the auction, I may be able to pick up something for the bloggershoot. I am not getting my expectations up to high ,since I missed the last couple of them, but one can hope. One never knows though and maybe I can pull it off and get something that will be a fun shooter.

Holy Tenacious Trotting Toyotas

I got an oil change today for my 2005 Toyota Corolla and looked at the sticker they put on the corner of my windshield to remind me when to get the next oil change - I was pretty stunned. The reason for that, the next service is due at 100,030 miles. In other words, I finally have a car that will surpass the 100K mile mark and I have had it since day one, so to speak, since I bought it new.

Now, there is a chance that my Mazda hatchback, I think it was a 323, or something with a 3 in it anyway, made it for that many miles but I sure don't remember that it did; I am pretty sure it had 90K or less when I donated it to charity. As far as I know, this is the first car I have ever owned on which I (with a little help from the wife and kids) put that many miles. Knock on wood, lest I jinx myself, it still runs like a charm.

Of course, it looks like crap - it has a bunch of dents in it from a hail storm a few or several years back and has not been washed in well over a year. I figure no one likely will steal a dirty filthy and dented car. Yet, it has been maintained well; although a crook may not think so from how it looks. Anyhow, those regularly scheduled oil changes seem to work wonders.

True (?) Confession Of A Negligent Discharge With A Glock

So, there is this guy, who posted a sort of true confession self expose on Reddit about how he supposedly shot himself in his leg while disassembling a Glock 30. He indicates, in essence, he has posted about it to warn others about firearms safety as opposed to firearms complacency. Well, I went to Reddit and I read it (his initial post) and my BS meter starting going off at least in the mid-range of the TIBS Scale (This Is BS Scale). In fact, I read it about 5 times and the more I read it the more I became convinced that either it is all a bunch of bullshaite - or the guy who wrote it is an ignoramus when it comes to Glocks - or he is incapable of writing intelligently about what he says happened.

I have pretty much ruled out the third conclusion because his writing is pretty decent, except that is when it comes to naming Glock parts and describing how one disassembles a Glock. That leads me to believe he is either totally full of it or he should not handle a Glock again until he gets some professional training on how to handle one properly. Of course, it could also be a combination of those two, or at least so I suppose.

So tell me, is it just me or does anyone else read more than a mere hint of BS in that 'true' accidental & negligent discharge confession. I would think someone even half familiar with a Glock, who actually knew how to take one apart, would know the correct terminology for the parts. Even if ignorant as to the names of the parts I imagine if he owned one and has handled it as frequently as he implies he has done so, then I think he would have known the steps for disassembly and for safe disassembly at that. Yet he did not unload the gun properly because he never removed the magazine, racked the pistol with the magazine still in the magazine well and apparently ejected one round but chambered another. Then when he squeezed the trigger, he shot himself!

As to him chambering a round, I have to ask: What is the "lifting arm" of which he said:

 "...the lifting arm grabbed another round and chambered it." 

I have not been trained about Glocks in about a year or so but I sure don't remember ever hearing about anything called a "lifting arm" as being part of a Glock when I did receive training about them. As far as I am aware, there is nothing in a Glock pistol that grabs a round and chambers it along the lines of something called a "lifting arm". Also, what are the "slide release pins" of which he writes? I am a somewhat familiar with Glocks and I have never heard of them having any parts called 'slide release pins'. Even if he just got the nomenclature wrong, why would he pull up any pins (or anything at all), which was what he claimed he did, before activating the trigger prior to disassembly? There is a "slide lock" and you do pull that but when done properly, you pull both sides of the slide lock down for disassembly.

Now I am wondering, did he have his pistol upside down while disassembling it, thus making it impossible to even see the chamber or maybe even if a cartridge even ejected when he thought it did?  Besides that, you only pull down on the 'slide lock' after having activated the trigger with an empty chamber. In other words you do not activate the 'slide lock' prior to pulling the trigger, as he says he did with the "slide pins" but subsequent to having done so.

Maybe he does not know how to express himself properly, or maybe just does not know squat about Glocks and how to operate them, but what he wrote sure activates the BS meter and has me wondering if the whole post is just a troll by some guy who injured himself in another way and thought it would be cool to say he shot himself. Mind you, maybe he did shoot himself, I am just saying that I am rather skeptical based on what I read.

If he did shoot himself though, as he described, he ought to attend a professional refresher training course for firearms safety and another for how to safely handle and operate a Glock.

Yet Another Woman With Her Finger On The Trigger, Kind Of...

...sort of, just about maybe like all the others I have shown but not quite. This time her finger is not on the gun's trigger but seemingly is on...how should I say it...that other trigger. I am none too sure which one is potentially more dangerous although I am pretty sure that if she has clean hands then having her finger on this trigger will not cause an accidental discharge.

Is There A Cotton Shortage?

I know pork went up in price a year or two ago due to some virus wiping out a lot of the little porkers. Chickens and other fowl are going up in price as are eggs because of some bird virus hitting them recently. Blue socks are almost impossible to buy my way (at least navy or dark blue in three packs or more) supposedly due to some problem with indigo supplies and I had heard all about them. I'll be damned though if I also had heard about a cotton shortage. There must be one or so I would guess judging by the prices of Haines cotton underwear at Sears.

I went to my local Sears today thinking I'd buy a package or two of tightie whities - specifically Haines Classics. They were on sale and I thought that was good - buy one package of 7, get another 25% off. I found an even better deal at another display where they had packages containing an extra pair of undies making them 8 packs with the same deal of buy one and get 25% off another. I did not see a price anywhere, well at least until I put on my spectacles. On the back of the package, the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price was shown at $36.00 a pack (for either the 7 or 8 pack). There was no other price shown. I asked a store clerk about the price, she told me that the MSRP was the correct price and I said thanks but no thanks and left with the thought of fuck you Sears being screamed by my inner me.

I just checked online and Walmart it has Haines briefs for less than $10 a 7 pack, don't know if they are the classics or not. Target is pretty close to that. Sears had them advertised online for just under $24.00 a 6 pack (which is a pretty high price itself). So what gives with that $36.00 in store price! What gives is that I am going to shop elsewhere.

If Someone Tries To Drive Off In Your Car, Don't Do This...

...because it is about as stupid as stupid can be unless of course maybe your baby is inside the car and even then it I pretty friggin extreme.
 

On the other hand, if you happen to be a passerby, who can help with a high degree of certainty and without putting innocents in danger, then go ahead and do what you can legally do to stop it.

The Police Must Have A Bug Up Their Ass...

...to have charged these kids criminally over this prank. A fair and fitting punishment would have been for the kids to either clean up the mess or pay for the clean up performed by a professional pest removal company and detention for a week. We live in a truly bizarre and pitiful predicament when law enforcers find it obligatory to become involved with such a high school prank let alone charge anyone for it.

Marine Represented Herself As Her Own Attorney...

...and may have been a fool as the saying goes but there is no way that I can fathom how she lost her case. She was drummed out of the Marine Corps for displaying a single bible verse at her workstation and failing to remove it when so ordered. To have dishonorably discharged her for failing to obey the order to remove that verse seems to me to be a blatant violation of her religious freedom. Her new, and high powered, attorney (yep she wised up quickly) feels the same way. More here.

There Is A Major Flaw In This Philosophy

 

I found this image on Facebook and although I am sure the person who posted it there thought of it as a wonderful image to push for unabashed self expression in a good way, there is seriously something very wrong with that philosophy. You see, when you don't give a damn about what others think when you do something wrong in life, it can lead to terrible consequences.

 

If you don't think I am right about that, then consider this: It is apparently the same philosophy followed by folks like Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, Aileen Wuornos, Gary Leon Ridgway, Pol Pot, Joseph Stalin, and Adolph Hitler to name just a few. They lived life the way they wanted to do so and that was by wantonly killing others without regard to what others thought about them.

Another High Ranking Military Commader About To Be Fired By Obama?

I don't know, but after reading this article, I cannot imagine anything but the swoop of Obama's axe not being far from his neck. I truly think that President Obama is setting us up, knowingly or unwittingly, for a major catastrophe with regard to our military preparedness, specifically with regard to our lack of it. My gut feeling tends to make me believe that it is knowingly with forethought but that part of me is only a small percentage above the part that believes no U.S. president would do that to his own country. Then again...

Some Excellent Advice About Firearms Training

I agree with virtually everything said in this article containing 10 pointers on firearms training. I think some of the issues need more of an explanation but you get a good general idea of how to avoid pitfalls and to assure you are getting good training.

If you already clicked on the link and read the article you may have noted that number 10 does not seem to have anything to do with firearms training but rather with actual self defense carry and use of a firearm. Believe me, nothing could be further than the truth even though the author expressed is as I just laid it out. When I go to the range, I assure that I have my pistol, extra magazines (or in the case of a revolver in years passed I had extra speed loaders), a flashlight and sometimes even inert pepper spray to use for training. Why anyone go to the range with only the mag in the mag well, or the rounds in the cylinder (without a speed loader ready) to practice for self defense type shooting is beyond my understanding - yet people do it. It is clearly not the smart thing to do though and you should always have extra loading devices with you for your particular firearm(s) when at the range if only because you don't have to stop to reload the mag or cylinder bullet by bullet after each round of shooting. It makes it more efficient, makes if more fun and makes more sense. If shooting for self defense training or practice it is essential to learning how to do it right although it does not preclude you never training and practicing how to load bullet by bullet in the event you wind up someday without a speed loader or without an extra or useable magazine.

Anyway, as I said, I agree with virtually everything that was in the article. From that you can imply that I am a big fan of folks who shoot being properly trained in how to do it. If nothing else, getting enough training will allow you to improvise in a situation that you may not have expected or for which you never trained. Believe me when I say that it is better to have some good training than not to have it when it comes to firearms and their use.

Who Owes You?

 

Generally, I agree with the above but not in everything. Sometimes some folks owe other folks a lot. While it is nice to think that no one owes us anything, thus implying that we too owe no one anything and that we can make it solely on our own, it simply is not true. In reality, others help us along the way. We owe them and we owe them more than we often would like to admit. So, this weekend, at least, let's remember those who sacrificed their all for us, they who lost their lives defending us. We definitely owe them at least our respect and honor forever.

I Wonder What Thoughts He Left Behind With The Shopkeeper

In the estimation of many of the people of this country, mostly black Americans (and that is merely a statement of fact and note I did not say in the estimation of most black Americans ), Michael Brown has become some sort of hero. Some, it seems, have elevated him to the status of demigod because in death he pushes their police hating, race baiting and anti-white racist agenda.

There is a lot of controversy about his being seen as the good guy in the events that led to and caused his death. A temporary memorial was continuously defaced and a tree planted in his honor was chopped down recently. That was a temporary memorial (it has been removed by Fergusson) and was really turning things upside down as far as ideals go. That a permanent memorial for him has been announced is absolutely an act of craziness.  In fact though, no matter how convoluted people's ideals must have become to allow for it, a permanent memorial is being erected in his honor (imagine him having honor). Part of that memorial will be a bronze plaque with a heart rending inscription on it.

Those words sure make him seem like a saint, as if he was a nice guy who always did good things and left people smiling at the prospects of seeing him again. The problem with that is that no one, at least to my knowledge, has ever interviewed the store clerk whom Michael Brown essentially manhandled to rob cigars from the convenience store.  No one ever interviewed Police Officer Darren Williams to ask how he is faring with the post traumatic stress that he is almost assuredly suffering since he had to shoot Michael Brown to defend himself. Instead, they still parade around in protest marches shouting "Hands up - don't shoot" a phrase that was proven to be an absolute fabrication made up by liars and perpetuated by race baiters and racists who scream for officer Wilson's head. Officer Wilson was not only not indicted, he was exonerated of any wrongdoing. Yet, he is still considered a murderer by many and Michael Brown as some sort of a martyr. The truth is though, when you look at the facts, a different Michael Brown emerges from all of the mist caused by all of their crocodile tears.

 Michael Brown was, in my estimation, a heinous thug but don't let my opinion sway you as to what you think of him - let the facts do that. Just watch he video of him in the convenience store. Just check on the court documents about how he attacked officer Wilson. Note that those records contain not only Officer Wilson's statement but reliable eye witness statements (as well as ones later proven to be lies but those were the ones saying officer Wilson was the aggressor) and physical evidence all indicating that Brown was attacking Wilson when Wilson shot Brown.

So why all the praise for a deceased apparent thug (at least from anyone other than his parents who of course would love him no matter what)? I believe it is because he was black and officer Wilson was white and they who honor the thug have an agenda that flies in the face of reason, ethics and morality. There is no doubt about it as far as I am concerned.

It has gotten so bizarre that maybe soon the malcontents will be protesting: Branches up - don't chop! Anyway, I can tell you that before yesterday, when I first saw that memorial plaque, I did not have a bucket list. I do now. So far, the only thing on the list is for me to go to the Michael Brown memorial and take a piss on it. I'll never do it but it is nice to dream about doing it nonetheless.

Gun Maintenance Reminder & Incentive

Once again, spring has sprung and is upon us with its fine but fickle weather and summer will soon be here. There has been a decent amount of rain in many areas of the country (sorry CA, nothing personal) and there have been several cool to almost cold days as well as quite a few very warm to hot humid days around where I live in the less than Constitutional state of NYistan. So far, the spring weather has been unpredictable as it oft can be but as usual it is all leading up to hotter and more humid days in many parts of the USA as summer draws nigh.

Thus it is a good time to get some firearms maintenance completed. Humidity and gun metal, especially for blued firearms, do not mix and that means it is an excellent time to give your guns a good cleaning and lubrication. If you do a field strip or a complete breakdown of your guns, when you reassemble them, it is a good idea to also do a function check of each. I am not going to get into this as much as I have in past years except to stress how important it is to do this for all the guns in your collection anywhere from 2 to 4 times per year whether or not they have been fired or stored (or both) and whether or not you regularly clean them after firing them and that this time of year is an excellent time to do it especially since many folks don't shoot as much over the summer and their guns get forgotten in the safe or wherever for those months. Taking care of them now, with a  little preventive maintenance, can save you a lot should  you neglect them and they rust.

Just Cracked Open My Second Bottle Of...

...Long Trail Ale of the night. I decided to try this stuff because I enjoyed another brew made by the same company, not all that long ago, while in NH. It was a Long Trail IPA Limbo and that was a darned tasty beverage.

As for my current selection, I won't BS you with saying it tastes something like apple smoked squirrel nuts, or effervescent holy horse shit hops with a hint of oak and vanilla, because to me it merely tastes like a darned good ale. It's only 5% alcohol by volume but that beats a Budwiper or a Spoors any day and is a good choice for a work-week-night.

It's brewed by Long Trail Brewing Co. and is labeled as an "Original Vermont Amber Ale". If you like an ale with a distinct but not too strong flavor of hops, try one, I think you will enjoy it. I know one thing about it for sure, I surely am enjoying it.

After surviving stage 4 throat cancer, 25 years or more after I quit smoking, need I say more? Although a babe is pictured this message is meant especially for my son. I hope it sinks in because he smokes now and then when drinking and it's getting to be more and more frequent.

Affirmative Action And Race Baiting Hiring At Their Best...

...or should I say at the ultimate predicted outcome! Imagine, a firefighter to afraid to fight fires who refuse to do so and who has even disappeared during a three alarm blaze. No, he apparently did not vanish because he was engulfed in flames or under the debris of a collapsed building but allegedly because he essentially was to much of a sluggard to do the job and had gone AWOL. Such are the reported alleged claims against a NYFD rookie who has been nicknamed Tragic Johnson.

Members of the FDNY are reportedly afraid to get rid of him, according to the NY Post, because:

"But department members are afraid to openly complain or criticize Johnson, who is black, because he was hired under a court order to increase minority hiring in the FDNY."

In addition, it has been reported that it took him three tries to get through the firefighter's academy! And he still is supposedly not doing his job. If he was white, Asian, Hispanic or any other possible combination, I believe that the chances are he would have been fired at the end of the first academy try if it is true he flunked it.

The Mystery of The Man Under The Mattress...

...is currently being investigated by NYPD detectives and is being handled as a homicide. If indeed the man was murdered, I doubt the killer smart enough to get away with murder if only because he hid the body in a place where it was sure to be found. Hilton hotels just do not have mattresses as lumpy as that one must have been. More here but not much more because apparently police either have few clues or are keeping mum.

...usually floats atop the surface of a pond, this type though has sunk lower than the low and is mired deep down in the much at the bottom of the cesspool. To solicit money as donations toward the fight against cancer, especially in the name of cancer that afflicts children, and then to give only a tiny fraction of the amount you collected, is about as low as you can go when it comes to con games in my opinion. U.S. Law Enforcement Probably Has Enough Military Equipment To Last About 25-50 Years...

...so I have no clue as to what good President Obama's curbing military equipment being issued to  law enforcement (source) is going to do except maybe gain him some political points. Don't get me wrong, it is a small step in the right direction, I just truly believe that law enforcers, in general, need to be stripped of most every bit of military gear and equipment they have been issued with the exception of most of their personal protective body armor. They do not need machine guns (note I did not say submachine guns) , they do not need armored personnel carriers or armored assault vehicles, they do not need tracked vehicles that can destroy a house by knocking it down with an attached ram, they do not need 50 caliber rifles, they do not need drones, they do not need 90-95% of the militarized gear and equipment they now have. Military gear and equipment should be reserved solely for the military and steps should be taken to strip LE of what they have of it already and to turn them back into law enforcers, who serve and protect us and our Constitution, instead of becoming the right hand of tyrannical government.

Was Bob A Burglar Or Maybe A Confused Drunk...

...who walked into the wrong apartment through an unlocked door. It's been reported that a woman in New Haven, CT, called the police about someone who had broken into her apartment. She reportedly asked that someone who was in her hallway and received the reply "Bob" from the alleged burglar whom the police are now seeking. Bob then reportedly fled through a backdoor. The thing is, nothing was reported stolen. (Source.) 

It almost sounds to me as if a confused drunk, or maybe just an overly tired and confused person, walked into the wrong apartment through the open front door and then left hurriedly though the back door when he realized something to the effect of "hey, that wasn't my wife's voice"! Who knows, maybe he was a wannabe rapist, a cat burglar or a pyscho or maybe he was just dazed and confused and in the wrong place after a long night partying.

ISIS Threatens Obama And Worshippers Of The Cross...

ISIS has specifically targeted Christians and the president of the United States for death at their hands(source.) While I think Obama the absolute worst president in my lifetime (close to or maybe the worst of them of all time) I would defend, with my life, the president of the United States of America if the need arose for me to do so. 

A miserable death to all ISIS goat fuckers could come none too soon as far as I am concerned.

I Was Never A Law Enforcement Buff...

...and throughout my 32 year plus LE career I did not collect all that much memorabilia. Yet, when I was going through a box in my garage today, I did find some patches and a few pins. They almost all bring back some good memories.  found a total of 8 LE patches and 9 pins. Four of the pins were given to me to commemorate my years of service in either the Customs Service or the federal government. I have 10, 20, 25 and 30 year pins. They are probably worth all of about $1.79 apiece (at most) monetarily but do have a small bit of meaning for me. The other four pins were all given to me by LEOs, from other agencies, with whom I worked on cases. I have one from DEA, another from the Secret Service (for a SS protective detail), another from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the last one is from Her Majesty's Customs and Excise Investigation Division (I'll be damned if I can remember what case that was regarding). My favorite pin is the one I got along with a Commissioner's Unit Citation for my part in a major investigation in Texas.

The few patches I have are imaged below.

The Border Patrol patch is now over 32 years old and
may be as old as 36 depending on what year I got
 it between 1979 and 1983 when I was in the BP.

 

 

Once upon a time, I also had a Haitian Immigration patch but I have no idea what has become of it. After spending 30 days in Haiti and giving away numerous U.S. Customs patches and other memorabilia I was given a single patch that an Immigration officer had pinned to his uniform shirt. Had I been a collector, I imagine I would have traded instead of giving things away.

 

I also found a photo album of some photos from my days in the Border Patrol. Only a couple of shots of me and some of the borderline, some Mexican yutes I dealt with back then and some illegals. Oh yeah, there were a couple or few shots of the cattle feed lots near town. I sent that album to my great-grandfather who loved it.

 

I do have some other mementos from my service, a raid jacket or two from the Customs Service (I think I still have the one I wore the night and next day that I helped on the dig at the WTC), an expired official passport, an identity card from Haiti that ID's me as basically untouchable by Haitian LE while I was working there, and a plastic jar full of burned off and soot covered melted ammo from the Customs Range at 6 WTC (that was recovered right after 9/11). Then there are my certificates of achievement, firearms instructor certifications, award plaques and letters of commendation and such. All worthless, I guess except to me. I suppose someday, I'll pass them all to my son - he can use them as targets, burn them or cherish them as he chooses; I would hope for the latter.

 

There are some I never got that I would like to have gotten. I tried to get my cancelled credentials from my time flying as a Federal Air Marshal right after 9/11. They did not even give us volunteers a letter of appreciation (what a scumbag administration they had - at least at the time); I did get a letter of commendation, in fact two, for my service with the FAMs but those letters came from the Assistant Commissioner of Customs (I was a Customs Special Agent at the time). Out of the hundreds of agents in my office, I was the only one either stupid enough or crazy enough (or both) to volunteer for that duty. Never saw even a single terrorist on any of the flights I flew, and I flew on literally hundreds of flights, but I was ready for them even if scared shitless at the prospects of facing them down and taking them out.

 

About the only other tings I have, that come to mind, (and I may yet have a few more than this) are a U.S. Customs wall plaque, a toy bucket and shovel from a tiki bar in Clearwater Beach, FL (some great zombies came with that bucket and sure got me drunk while on a SS detail - on my free time), my retired credentials from DHS and my cancelled creds from Customs when we converted to DHS. I imagine most others I worked with have larger collections of collectible mementos than me, as I said I was never much of a collector of LE memorabilia and never was a buff.

 

Oh yeah, there are a few other items that have come through my career with me, like my Beretta 92SB and two Beretta 92FS pistols and my Glock 26 as well as my Remington 870 Express shotgun. I carried them all on official duty at one time or another. If my son likes or does not like my other memorabilia, I know for sure he likes those firearms! Of anything I saved throughout my career, those are certainly my favorite mementos.
